Land Of The Noon Day Sun

This photograph was taken four years ago flying over my house in western NC.  I was lucky enough to be able to sit in the co-pilot's seat.

The southern Appalachians are like no other mountain range. There is a sharpness to them you would not expect to find in this area.  From above you have the feeling that few people live here, that it is mostly forest.  There are mountains and valleys ranging from 5800 to1200 feet. They are also the oldest mountains in the United States.

The Cherokee named them the Nantahala because Nantahala means land of the noon day sun.
