Ellie stayed in her sunroom most of the day. It was becoming her sanctuary. Her field work station. With all the animal activity outside, this was the best spot. Cool and comfortable, no bugs and nice seating. The recently cleaned windows provided a "reach out and touch' feeling.
The sun was making its downward descent in the western sky. A Wednesday evening. The hum drum of the room air conditioner along with the ceiling fan spinning around and around made the room delightful. Her recently purchased Mac laptop made this a perfect viewing station as her technology allowed her to capture most everything. With a tripod positioned in the right southwestern corner, some six feet away from a full wall of windows, she had front row seating to the animal kingdom. And binocular. A droid.
In the distance, the scalloped mountains rose and dropped one ridge after the other. Her Tibetan flags added a little color to the right walled windows.
Animals have extraordinary senses. With a blue moon just two days away, she could understand the frenetic animal behavior. Perhaps they were seeking refuge for the things they did not understand.
The hummingbird seeped and lifted in an almost synchronized art form. Three seconds of sipping, two of fluttering. A whisk and a zip and it was gone. Another young rabbit moves into the landscape. It occupies the same bald patch of ground as the one before it. And, the cardinal, dove and crow.
Ellie knew something about the area at cliff's edge. There were vibrations under the ground. An electrical effect. Six weeks earlier, sitting on her peach-colored Adirondack chair, her feet were buried into the lush grass. The shock forced her to put on rubber soled shoes before she would attempt to sit down again. In time, she moved the four chairs closer to the hill. She wondered if the animals, too, experienced the vibrations. She knew they were drawn to it. But what?
Then there was shadows on the ground, she could see them from her peripheral vision. When she looked up, the image disappeared. Some were quite large, the size of an automobile, others were small.
Was she being watched? It sure felt like it.
